desktop background display fault

Lenovo 3000 n200

Specs: Windows Vista Home Premium
I had to have my operating system reloaded from my start-up discs after a viral infection. Since then the background display options have changed. I can stretch the picture to fill the screen [1st option ] but if I try the 2nd [tiles] I get one section of the photo filling the whole screen, and if I want the centre option, then the central part ot the photo is enlarged to fit the screen when it should be the whole photo with black strips at either side. It seems that it may be due to the graphics card, but if I change the resolution it does not help.
I am not very good on dealing with settings problems, so if you can help please or know what is wrong, please keep it simple!!

I'm not really sure, never encounted this problem before.

It may be a problem with the picture your trying to use? Have you tried using a different picture for your background and seeing if the same thing happens??

Thanks Miles for your answer.
While looking at other forums trying to see if anyone else has this problem I finally found one. They had opened their "pictures" folder and right-clicked on one photo to "set as desktop background" and the problem arose then. They were told to set the background via the "Personalise" and "desktop background" window and the problem went. I had done this first and had the problem so I did the reverse and opened "pictures" directly and right-clicked on a picture, and then found the "center" button worked. The "tile" button changed in appearance and did a whole picture plus part of one picture alongside it!! So I have partial success but still do not understand why it should have changed.
