dell inspiron 530s which is now slow to start up

Specs: Windows Vista
slow start up for windows and internet ( approx 50 mins )
icon in bottom right hand corner has a red cross over an icon of two monitors.
The red cross disappears when the start up has finished.
Lots of memory left but the computer did start to slow down but now its ridiculous.
Once running everything is fine.

Many thanks for your reply.

Tried diagnostics and all ok
I've sat here for 35 mins waiting for start up and just before it finally started up,a message came up saying ' Persistance Module' not working. I've no idea what this is....help?

Don't confuse memory with hard drive space, they are 2 completely different things. The 530s accepts a max of 4GB (4 x 1GB) memory. You haven't stated how much you have but 1GB is the minimum requirement for Vista. For decent performance you should have 2GB or more.

Which anti-virus program do you use? When's the last time you did a full scan for viruses & malware? Have you ever run a cleaner or managed your startup apps?

If the diagnostics have passed with no error code, it can be an issue with the Operating System. Please perform a clean boot to isolate the issue. Refer to the link given below:
