cpu keeps shutting down...error--cpu fan not

Specs: Windows Vista
an elderly lady--my friend has called saying her cpu is shutting down unexpectdly..error message is....cpu fan not working...called hp and was told to send cpu back to company(two weeks) back up , as if they are going to format and start over....she took side off cpu and said fan in the mother board is running....fan in the power supply is running....what else is there to check???

The CPU fan may be spinning but not at the appropriate speed. If it is running slower than it should be then it is not cooling the cpu well enough. If the machine shuts down it is protecting itself from overheating and telling you that the cpu fan is not working.

If it is under warranty then she should send it back for repairs.
