Hi,

I'v got a problem where I cannnot open of delete a particular folder.

If I try to open it is comes up saying "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable"

If I try to delete it, it shows "Error 0x80070091: The directory is not empty".

I can however rename the foleder which I found odd. I have tried Unlocker to delete it but this does nothing. I found alot of people reccomending a chkdsk, but it windows it just opens, scannes the indexes and then closes. If I try to run it in dos, it gets part way through scanning the indexes and then terminates because of an "unexpected error".

Prior to this happening I had been doing some partition rearranging with Acronis Disk Director. All of the partitions moved and still seem to work properly, it's just this one folder I'v found not to work properly. The Drive is a 1TB pretty much full so I dont really want the MBR(?) to get messed up as thats alot of recovering I'd have to do if it did. The drive is in a mirror if this makes a difference.

Any suggestions would be great.

Cam.

Try this:

Click on Start, go to All Programs >> Accessories, right click on Command Prompt & choose Run as administrator. Accept the elevated action prompt.

In the Command Prompt console type: chkdsk c: /f /r ... you should get the message below.

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6001]
Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Windows\system32>chkdsk c: /f /r
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

Press Y & reboot the machine after that.

Ok sorry about teh delay with following this through, but I tried the 'chkdsk /f /r' in safe mode, but it still comes up with an unexpected error when checking the idexes. The problem has gotten abit worse now, as everytime windows starts it tries to chkdsk the drive and freezes on 71% of checking hte indexes. Its rather annoying as a couple of times iv just pressed the power button before going to work not seeing whether it started up or not only to come home and find the computer stuck at the mentioned screen.

I'm thinking that the only way out of this will be to redo my raid entirely.

just to clarify, the problem is not with c: drive its g: which is located on a mirror, separate to the stripe that c: is located on.

Is the G: drive part of a RAID setup? Is it a separate physical drive or a logical drive?

G: is located on a mirrored stripe. Hence "g: which is located on a mirror" from my previous post.

There are only 2 more things I can think of. One is using an external USB HD enclosure and connecting it to another PC. The second is, since chkdsk didn't work, try the diagnostic tools from the HD manufacturer. They are usually available on their site.

just an update on the situation.

I'v now tried a program called Paragon Hard Disk Suite 2008 and also Partition magic 8.

Partition Magic 8, comes up saying "Partition Magic has detected and error 113 on the partition starting at sector 189xxxxxxx on disk 2. This partition overlaps another partition or the end of the disk." it then offers to fix the error by truncating sectors 174xxxxxxx to 213xxxxxxxx. which I dont want to od as it sounds like it will end up with me losing data.

The paragon manager reads afew of the partitions on the hdd as unallocated and two of them as having corrupt file systems, which is odd.

So I went back to what I was doing originally before this mess happend, which is moving the partitions on the hdd so that I could enlarge one of the partitions, (g:). I am using Acronis Disk Director to do this, and after the last reboot the chkdsk prompt came up again but this time successfully finished! Yay!

The issue now is that when I double click the g: icon in My Computer, it comes up saying "G:\ Application not found" what application ?! I can view/ use the drive if I right-click and open however.

It sounds like some program has become associated with the partition but I cant seem to find what.

How does disk management see the drive? What does it call the partition?

the problem has seemed to fix itself now. thanx for your help.

Disk management sees G: drive as a primary, and the other partitions as logical partitions which is right.
