I've recently set up windows mail. I added in all my contacts. Now when I want to send an email, I go to type the recipients email and in outlook express, the name would automatically pop into the window if I typed just a few characters. In windows email, it doesn't work. Is there something that needs to be changed in settings so that the email address will pop up after typed a few characters? I've looked high and low for something to change and I can't find anything.
Thanks

Open your contacts folder. Look at what it says in the toolbar. Does it say Organize, Views Burn. This is the default so it probably does. My best guess here is that your Contacts folder has to be doctored to act as a contacts folder.
Open your Contacts folder. Click Organize>Properties ant then customize. On the properties screen look in the box where it says "All items". Bring down the ment to the right. You will see Contacts listed as one of the options. Click it then click Apply OK at the bottom. Check to see if this has any impact on your problem.

OMG...it worked...THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH. It's tough because I'm a creature of habit and I like it when I can have things the same old way!!!

ok, I just checked another email address...it only works on the emails I've already sent. If I haven't sent an email to a particular person from this computer, it doesn't work. It's so much easier to just type in a couple of letters and have their email pop up.

Sorry...

That was a shot in the dark because I was blindsided by it at one time. I think your problem is in your options. Check to see if the people you send email to are added to your contact list. There is an option for that.

Yes, that is checked in options. But I have a list of 75 contacts that I want to be able to send email and it's just so much easier to send them when you can just type a couple of characters and their email address pops right up.

I don't like Windows Mail better than Outlook Express. You can even make additions to the dictionary for words that you use all the time.
thanks for your help.

I share your plight. Even Microsoft has given up on Windows Mail and recommends you use Windows Live Mail. Web based mail but seems to work. Your choice.

Autocompletion of addresses uses a separate list of the last 29 addresses you sent messages to, not the contacts list and it is stored in the registry.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Recently Used Addresses

If you enter an incorrect address it will stay there until you enter 29 more and it is knocked off the list.

The Geek has a method where you go in to the registry and delete all the addresses listed in the right pane except the Default one and they will reestablish their self when you enter more addresses.

I know this doesn't solve your problem but maybe help you understand the reason.

If you go to Windows Live Mail the autocomplete will work.
