I've read a number of threads on this but most seem old and slightly different. I have an HP machine (1 year old and fully loaded) running Vista Home Premium. Had zero issues .... until .... Sunday night when I s--- the PC down and it started installing automatic updates. I let it do it's thing and when I came down in the morning it was frozen. I hard booted it but it then would load until the screen saying 'Configuring Updates - 0% complete' after which it would reboot within a few seconds ... and it would do this again and again and again ....
I have researched extensively and so far tried:
System Repair - it fails and says it can not find OS files
System Restore - it hangs for 12+ hours (after which I shut it off) on the 'finalizing restore' phase
safe Mode - does not work, still tries to configure updates and reboots. At this point I do not want to reinstall Windows as I have a ton of data on my drive that I would lose.
Any help much appreciated.

... plz do as Response Number 1 (click me) ... post back ... thx
