my hard drive crashed and won't boot to windows- it actually boots to windows sorta- but then gives me a black background with a functioning visible mouse. luckily I had a 10gb partition and loaded vista. i can see all my stuff on "D" (150gb) but I really want to make it bootable. I ran hard drive test- passed I ran 6 hours of virus scan- passed I tried vista repair boot- didn't work. I feel sure I can make this partition boot with your help

Are you saying that "D" is a separate physical hard drive ?

I have 1 drive (160gb). It's got a partition (10gb) which I formatted and installed vista. Now when I boot I get 2 operating systems to choose from. Both Vista. The old vista won't boot- the new install on the partition will boot. I want to get my old vista bootable cause that's where all my programs are

If your hard drive crashed, maybe you should run some diagnostics on it first from the manufacturer. It may not be just Vista that crashed.

i've already run a diag- the hard drive is healthy. I also formatted the partition on it and installed vista and it installed without a glitch. I believe it has something to do with the boot files. I just don't know how to reinstall the boot files (if that's it)

If you tried Vista startup repair and it didn't work, then you might be out of luck as far as using the other partition to boot from. If you had an saved an image then you could have tried that. My feeling is that you will have to reinstall your programs, though someone else may have a better idea. However, you can certainly retrieve your douments from "D", but you know that already.

yes- i already tried a vista repair with no luck- I can get my docs and stuff from the D drive, but I really want to boot from it because I have about 30 programs. For the future- how can I make an image of my whole drive routinely (about once a month) I tried acronis but that program is too complicated- couldn't figure it out. Plus I'd like to hear if anybody else knows how I can make the D drive bootable. The D drive contains vista- but won't boot. thanks

Which version of Acronis did you use ? I've used it in the past and didn't find it too complicated, and most people who post to this site seem to like it. I use Norton Ghost now, which usually works very well. I've restored images many times with it.
