computer shut down and will not reboot

June 26, 2010 at 06:09:19
Specs: Windows XP, Gateway ML6732
I was using my laptop and it shut down during use. I tried the ATW (sp) procedure and that did not resolve the problem. I opened the back and there is no major debris in the fan. Sometimes (not able to determine what triggers it) I can hear a faint ticking. It sounds like it is coming from where the battery is located next to the power input. Tech support won't help. They just referred me to the ATW reset (which I did before I went to them). Helpful, right? Any suggestions?

I am not familiar with ATW (sp) procedure but I assume that when you try to boot the computer there is no signs of life at all. If there are signs of life, can it boot the Windows OS CD/DVD? If it can’t do that, do you have access to a spare power adapter to be sure it is getting power? If it is not too difficult can you remove the CD/DVD drive and the hard drive on at a time and try to start it again. If it starts with the CD/DVD drive removed than that drive is suspect. If it starts the boot procedure but can’t find the OS with the hard drive removed than the hard drive is suspect. Faulty memory is another consideration. Hope you find the problem soon.

"...I am not familiar with ATW (sp) procedure"'nt find the terminology in quick google either!

... enter your bios and see if it stays on, perhaps load the "default" settings.

... are the dates scrambled in the bios? How old is the machine?
