Computer freezing after restart

September 1, 2009 at 17:57:55
Specs: Windows Vista
Whenever I restart my computer/shut down then turn it back on, it freezes up. The whole computer freezes, and ctrl+alt+del doesn't come up. Then rocket dock is working. One way that I got it to unfreeze, which is probably stupid, is I click everything that is on my rocket dock. Then I press ctrl+alt+del three times.

Then it comes up black screen, and says Internet failure options. I click ok. And it unfreezes.

I've cleaned out the fan. My laptop isn't hot. I've removed temp folder and unwanted files. I've ran CCleaner and Disk cleanup.

I've had this laptop for about a month now, and this is the only time it ever froze up. This started happening two days ago.

It freezes on random times, as well.

I am
Windows Vista Home Premium
AMD Turion(tm) X2 Dual-Core Mobile RM-74
2.20 GHz
3.00 GB RAM
32-bit Operating System

So, what should I do, guys?

From what you said it is difficult to decide hardware or software.

Could run in bios screen and watch health numbers. See if it locks up in bios.

Might boot to cd and run memtest or other diag suite to try to weed out hardware.

I suspect hardware but software can still cause all this.

See event viewer logs and might have to look at any dump logs.

Could try a vistape cd/dvd or even your install dvd. Just boot to dvd and let it sit on the installer screen and see it it locks up then.
