Computer freezes temporarily and often

Specs: Windows Vista
Something, possibly a dialogue box, periodically "flashes" on the upper left hand corner of my screen for about a second, which is not long enough for me identify what it is. The effect of this freezes my computer until I click a mouse button. The interval between "flashes" is 5 minutes, sometimes 10 minutes. This is particularly annoying when I am typing. Whatever I have typed after the computer freezes is lost, as in it never appears on screen. It's also annoying whenever I watch a video, since the dialogue box (or whatever it is) is accompanied by a "click" noise. I have performed several anti-virus/anti-malware/anti-spyware scans to no avail. I cannot identify whatever flashes or seem to get rid of it. Please help.

Maybe you could use some screen capture software to record your desktop. When you've captured the popup, play back the recording and pause it - that way you can note down what the little error says and it should be a good indication.

If the dialog box is related to a standard Windows error, there's a whole host of causes it could be. My guess would be maybe a bad hardware device that is temporarily locking up and crashing the system. You could check the Device Manager to see that everything is running smoothly.
