Sometimes this month (July 2008) M$ will push Windows Search 4.0 onto your desktop if you have Vista SP1 and you have configured your Windows Update to automatically install updates.
For those of you who may not be aware, Windows Search 4.0 was (& still is for now) strictly a voluntary option that you can pass if you don't want it. For the enterprise customers, M$ have tried so hard to sell it with their Seven Reasons why Windows Search should be on the company's desktops. For myself I believe that because MS has failed draw many suckers, they want to now push it down onto our Vista SP1 computers. Meanwhile, if you are running XP, don't fret - the Windows Search 4.0 will be an optional update (at least for now).
If you don't want it, configure your Windows Update to not automatically install updates.

Opps first the typo ...

should read

Next, M$ as Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde also offer THIS workaround that should permanently block installation of Windows search 4.0 for those that have the Automatic Updates feature enabled.

By the way if you adore M$ as Mr. Hyde, you may find THIS Add-on irresistible. It allows you to extend your search for files on M$ network servers.

XpUser,
Why do you say they had failed with Windows Search -- Am I missing something or is it simply because back then it wasn't & now it is a Windows Update patch?
Personally, I have yet to experience any adverse effect on this machine that can be directly attributed to the update & quite frankly I don't think I'm going to run into any ... knock on wood!
Arguably, the refined Search feature in Vista is much faster, nimbler & definitely better than what shipped with the older versions of Windows including the beloved XP.
Maybe you can elaborate on that. In XP & the others, third-party search utilities were not uncommon on Windows desktop & I happen to still have a couple installed on the XP side of this machine. Since installing Vista, I have not had a solidly compelling reason to seek out a third-party search tool to load on the machine to usurp the built-in one.
Talking about add-ons. I ran into this indexer gadget having tried elusively back in late May to easily verify the version of my Windows Search after loading the 4.0 preview update that was originally issued in March. I gotta tell you, it is quite a nifty & informative tool for any Vista user with the latest Search update installed on their machine.

Vista search that came with the install disc is too complicated and can't find a simple file after spending 15 minutes on it.
It was one of the FIRST things I replaced - with File Seeker. Simpler (don't have to click everywhere) and if the file exists, it will find it.
The Index for Vista Search was great. But I'll give it up for a program that finds the stuff I want.
I won't bother with version 4. Happy with what I have.
