A second attempt to open produces a "delta-search" page with pseudo chrome search box! This page has all bookmarks as with genuine chrome page.

I have removed Chrome and re-installed twice with the same result.
Chrome works normally on other comuters in house.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

There should be a program called "Browser Protect", uninstall it. It comes together with Delta Search and blocks attempts to change search engine or home page. Here's a full write-up and removal guide:

Also, you should scan your computer with AdwCleaner, because I'm almost certain you got some adware with Delta Search hijacker.
