Can't open any programs

June 1, 2009 at 10:38:54
Specs: Windows Vista
No virus shown. I can only run programs in Safe Mode. I've tried using a different User and I've tried the Command Prompt to repair any Vista errors and that resulted in no errors found. Help!!!!

Desperate, You may want to try the exe File Association Fix at the link below.

Thanks for the quick response but as I'm a complete novice the link is as clear as mud to me I'm afraid. I can operate Incredimail but yet I can't open Internet Explorer or any of the Office programs unless its in Safe Mode. I have taken it to the Geek Squad who said that it was probably because Trend and Webroot were no longer compatible, so I uninstalled Trend and upgraded my Webroot to include Anti-virus. It was fine for a week or so and now its started again.

You can try Windows's Restore feature and try restoring your PC to a time before the problem has occurred if you have system restore points available.

Boot into Safe Mode first. Then,

Start menu > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

Right-click System Restore and click Run As Administrator.

Choose a day and time prior to your problem and restore to it.

Thanks for that but that was one of the first things I tried before the Command Prompt etc., I just think theres something on Vista that isn't happy with the programs I'm running. I appreciate your help though.

Desperate, You would just go to the link I posted in Response Number 1 and In the File associations fixes box right click on exe and choose Save target as and save that file to somewhere you could easily find it (My Documents, etc.) then unzip it and right click the .reg file and choose Merge. This will merge the contents into the registry and hopefully will correct your problem. Here's the link again.

I've done exactly what you suggested and everything went without a hiccup but still no access to programs. I can get internet access OK but no Office programs/documents. Thank you sooo much for taking the time out to help me.

I've now developed another symptom. The sidebar is missing on Start up and then it locks up. I press Ctrl, Alt & Delete and the screen goes black, eventually a message comes on:
"Logon process has failed to create the security options dialogue. X - Failure - Security Options."
Hopefully, this means something??????????

Thank you sooooooooo much for all your help and advice. Looks like similar problems are being experienced by numerous others. I've found out - eventually, what was upsetting it. It was the LEXMARK wireless all-in-one. As soon as I uninstalled the program, it appears to be running fine again.

Desperate, Glad to hear the good news. Maybe the Lexmark Support site below would have a possible fix for that LEXMARK wireless all-in-one problem.

Thanks for posting back with the solution as it may be of help to others.
