One day I had to get a cd out o the drive by using the emergency release thing. when i restarted the cd drive was not listed. i have tried every conceivable way of getting it back and the drive does not require drivers. all of my cables are properly connected and working. the drive does not show up in the bios or the device manager

Greg,
Here's one thing you can try. Shut down the computer and unplug the cd-rom. Power up. After booting, shut down again, plug the cd-rom back in and boot up. This should force Windows to pick up the cd-rom as new hardware.

If the drive is all of a sudden not being picked up in the BIOS or Windows, there may be a problem with the hardware.

Have you tried swapping controllers for the drive - you could try the controller that you are currently using for your HDD for the optical drive & see if BIOS picks it up.

Sorry that didn't work for you. Try this: insert your windows installation disk and reboot. If it won't boot then it would appear to be a hardware issue.

I figured out what was wrong. I reset my BIOS for some reason, and it est everything to Parallel ATA only, but my HD requires SATA. So usually I set it to SATA and PATA enabled, but I accidentally did only SATA, but thanks anyway
