Can't delete folder off external hard drive?

March 23, 2010 at 23:36:28
Specs: Windows Vista
Hello,
I am having troubles deleting a folder off of my
1 TB Western Digital external HD. It had 15
MP3s and 1 jpg in it, today I went to play a
song and instead of getting a song I got an
error. I went to investigate and found 12 folders
and 22 files with strange names (e.g.
&╫ÉΩi1(>.x├ , and O┼c░
<.q). I would just leave it, but somehow it went
from ~100MB to 75 GB. When I try to delete it
or anything inside it, I get the message,"The
file name you specified is not valid or too long.
Specify a different file name"
I've also tried a program called MoveOnBoot, I
just get an error. I've tried naming a new
file/folder the same thing to try to get it to
replace it but it doesn't work.

Someone please help, thank you.

How much other stuff have you got on the drive? If possible, backup everything else & format the whole thing - the data in the folder has got corrupted somehow so it's worth error-checking the drive as well.

I have the same problem with those strange files on my external hard drive.
When I try to delete the files it says: ' Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk. '
I tried to delete with Dr. Delete and with Unlocker but didn't work.
Don't know what to do because I cannot store my data elsewere.

I had the same problem, but managed to fix it. I opened the properties dialogue of the external disk where the strange file was located. Then I opened the tab Extra. Then I clicked the error checking (Check now), with the option 'automatically fix file system errors'checked. It took some time and the disk could not be approached anymore. When I disconnected it en then reconnected it, I could simply delete the strange folder. I hope this solution works for other people too.

Hello,

I am experiencing the same problem with my WD hard drive.
Is it possible to get some help on how you guys solved your problems? My entire folder structure is showing these weird file names and am trying to recover all information.

Thank you in advance for any help.
