Subject: Can't boot Vista after Zune install
OS: Vista Ultimate/XP Home SP
CPU/Ram: P4 2.8GHz/4GB DDR2
Model/Manufacturer: Custom
Comment:

I run a dual boot system with Vista Ultimate as my default OS. I installed Zune on my XP partition and afterwards was not able to boot to Vista. Vista does not even show as a boot option. I tried running VistaBootPro 3.3 and everything looks great in there, but still no joy. I tried booting from the Vista DVD and after running Repair Startup I get this message:

"If you have recently attached a device to this computer, such as a camera or portable music player, remove it and restart your computer. If you continue to see this message, contact your system administrator on computer manufacturer for assistance."

I have removed all external USB devices, including my webcam, Zune and a multimedia audio controller, and I have uninstalled Zune software. I ran Repair Startup from the Vista DVD and I still get the above message.

Any ideas will be appreciated.

Thanks

OK, all is good now. I had previously tried the System Bootloader tool in VistaBootPRO, but this time I used the optional Force Bootloader Install, and that worked.

Zune has been nothing but headache for me. It belongs to my stepson and I have been trying to get loaded for him. The Zune software will not recognize the device in either Vista or XP, even though the OS does. After this debacle, I'm through with Zune. It's ridiculous that MS hardware with MS software installed will not work with MS operating systems. Pitiful.

I guess my stepson is stuck with a $250 80GB useless piece of junk.

I doubt Zune has caused Vista's boot failure... it is more than likely PEBKAC. I have had no problems with it and I too have a dual boot system.

Once I thought I was wrong, now I'm not so sure!

Good for you. I'm pretty sure that I clicked on the "Download" button properly, and I'm pretty sure that I clicked on the "Install" button correctly, and I'm pretty sure that the USB cable to the device was properly connected, especially since the OS could see it. For some reason, the Zune software could not. And if indeed PEBCAK, then how would you explain the error message that I received as stated in the first post?

This idiot waits with bated breath for you to explain how such a coincidence could occur.

Edited to say:

Still, I would be interested to know what went wrong with Zune, but that's for another forum, I'm sure. My stepson had the same problem when he tried to install it on his computer. The software recognizes his 8GB device but not his 80GB device... maybe a faulty device.
