I was using Acronis TrueImage to backup a partition saved as an image on my external HD to a new HD. It didn't complete correctly and I reboot but can't boot into Vista. This is strange because Vista was on a different hard drive then I was messing with. I got out my vista dvd and booted to it to try and repair. I clicked repair, but my vista OS didn't show up. Clicking Load Drivers shows all of my hard drives correctly...strange. I went to Next and then to command prompt. I'm presented with X:\Sources. I tried bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd and it scanned for vista installations. Said it found one at C:\Windows and asked if I wanted to add the installation to the bootlist. I said yes. It said element not found. Now I'm trying a chkdsk /r on C:. chkdsk is running now. But what else can I do? Help!

You may have copied the partition to the wrong hard-drive... very easy to do. if this is so the only option you have is to reinstall.

I ended up reinstalling Vista. Such a pain. I will try the Acronis image again on the other hard drive. Hopefully I don't screw up

Well here's what happened...

I put the image onto the new hard drive...correctly. I still didn't have a boot menu. I suppose that's what happens when you have vista installed and then try and "install" XP on a seperate HD, only I wasn't installing XP I was just putting an image of it.

So then I installed EasyBCD and added XP to the boot loader. Restarted and I had a boot menu. Selecting vista let me go into vista, selecting xp popped up an error about NTLDR being missing. I read somewhere that you have to copy some files from XP to Vista to make this work so I copied over the NTLDR, NTDETECT.COM and boot.ini over from XP to Vista. I imagine that's to tell Vista what to do with XP. I modified the boot.ini file to put XP on rdisk(1) instead of (0) where it apparently thought it was and XP loaded up.

I'm in XP now and I can see all of my hard-drives. The image worked which is a plus. I just hope I didn't forget anything/screw up anything. It's been a long day
