Subject: Cannot Record from ''Line In''
OS: Vista
CPU/Ram: Athlon XP3200+ 2GB
Model/Manufacturer: Self built
Comment:

I am attempting to transfer an Audio Cassette on to CD using the Acoustica ''Spin It Again''
recorder software. The problem is that although I can hear the sound playing through the computer speakers, I cannot get a signal from the (Default)''Line In'' connection to the recorder. In the Vista sound panel under the Recording tab,it lists 2 Mics & the ''Line In, both mics work but Line In doesn't. Checking it's ''Properties''it says it is both enabled and working. I have made sure ''Line In'' is chosen as the input on the recorder. I have also tried other similar recording software and the result is the same.Any advice will be gratefully received.

Vista Home Premium
ABIT NF7-S Ver2 MB
Athlon XP3200+ CPU
300GB Sata HDD
2GB PC3200 RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GS Graphics
NVIDIA(R) nForce(TM) Audio

Are you saying that you actually recorderd a track and it's not playing back after recording, or that when you press record you get no sound while recording?
Some software will record and not play back while recording, unless it has an option to playback while recording enabled.
Audacity is a free recorder that is Vista compatible and works great.

Hi there, thanks for your interest. Sorry if I did not explain my problem properly, the recorder doesn't record because it is not receiving a signal from the ''Line in''which is selected on the sound panel(right click on spkr icon on toolbar and select recording) and recorder input. I actually tried Audacity as well but results are the same, if however, I select mic on the panel, the recorder works fine. The fact that the mic input works indicates that the software is OK.

That's weird, as you are getting sound to speakers that rules out faulty line in.
I just had a look at your MB manual. Are you using the front panel connector? if front panel is connected check motherboard connections as per manual to check they are ok.
If all else fails you could try an add on PCI audio card.

I had somewhat the same problem using Spin It Again except I was recording vinyl lp records. I purchased a ion IPUSB turntable with usb connection to my home built computer (running Vista Ultimate.) The Acoustica Spin it again would not recognize any sound being recorded. I finally used the EZ Vinyl Converter that came with the Ion turntable. It did recognize the sound and then after it was saved as a mp3 file I took the mp3 file and ran it through Spin It Again. I like the filters that it offers to reduce click and pop and also the ability to trim the beginning and end of each track. It works fine to load it as an audio file.

I also plan on recording several old reel to reel tapes and plan on running the output from the Teac 3300 reel to reel into the line in of the sound card. I may use the EZ Vinyl Converter to capture the audio track but will go back to Spin It Again to reduce hum and hiss.

The tech support from Acoustica says you can record tapes (cassette and reel to reel).

I think the suggestion to pick up a separate audio card might be just what you should try. They are quite inexpensive and might just solve your problem.

Good luck and post back how you are progressing.
