Hello, my friend's c90s computer died recently and we believe that it is the bios, but are not sure

Here's how it happened: We took the laptop to a friend's house to use a video game tournament organizing software. We then brought it back to our dorm and he didn't use it until the next day. On the morning of that day, he browsed a few internet websites and then suddenly the screen was covered randomly with gray bars of pixels. There was no response so he unplugged it and tried rebooting. From there, every time we try to boot it up, the screen is either entirely gray and we can't do anything, or it displays what it should normally show us but with the same random bars of pixels. The only way we can boot up an operating system is by booting it in safe mode. Even then the screen is covered randomly by bars of pixels.

If it is not the bios, then what could it be.

any assistance would be appreciated.
