When you get Windows updates and install them a new restore point is created.
You can limit the amount of space used by system restore, or open the restore and remove older restore points.
Read all about it here.

i had a same problem and no virus could be found out then surfing and diagonising the proble i found some thing very helpful . one is the program windir which tells you the size of the folders in a tree form which i always wanted to have. other is the agent dm virus. but my system didnt had any virus rather i had installed a keylogger which use to create a backup of all the activity going on i uninstalled it and finally got back the space hope it might help u all.
1. check directory status with windir

I had installed Kaspersky anti virus, while I was in the middle of uninstalling it, there was a power failure, later when the lights came back and I turned on my PC, the kaspersky antivirus was still on the computer so I tried to start the uninstallation process again but the notification said that this action could only be performed on an installed program, so I tried to reinstall it so I could uninstall it again but when I tried to reinstall it gave another error notification, now I cannot uninstall it and I don't even have the antivirus though it shows on the computer, I'm stuck, neither can I solve the c drive space problem nor solve the installation of the antivirus problem!

Neelie, This is because the uninstall file has already logged the uninstall action and in the end deleted itself. This lead to some pointers and files related getting deleted, but the main files stayed on. Use some free uninstallers like Revo Uninstaller, or other similar free softwares to remove the files now. If these softwares also do not show the program as installed, then use CCleaner and remove the associated left back files from registry. The uninstaller detects a software even if one file relating to the software is left back....

Hope this works for you. In case, it does not, then let me know and i'll try to find a more apt way. My mail is tejas (at) tonz (dot) net
