Blank Screen after Log-In. HELP!

Hello. So I have an HP Notebook that runs on Vista - here's the problem. After a week of not using my laptop, which was previously shut down by placing on hibernate, I turn it back on and attempted to log in. However, it froze in the process and I needed to hold the power button to shut it off. When the system was finally booted up again, I logged in and then I came to a blank, black screen. Nothing on my desktop came up - not even the start menu. 2 notification windows for the "Spyware Doctor" I have on my comp popped up. The first one asked if I wanted to run an Intelli-Scan and the second, said that it was updated and that I needed to reboot. Other than that, there was nothing else. I really don't know what may have caused this or how I can go about fixing it. Please help!

Can you boot into Safe Mode Command Prompt ? If yes, type in at the command prompt " %systemroot%\system32\rstrui.exe " or " C:\Windows\System32\Rstrui.exe " (without quotes) if Windows is installed to C:\Windows.
This will take you to the System Restore GUI window. Choose a date before the problem occurred if this trick works.
Hope the above helps.

I'm not quite sure how to boot it in Safe Mode Command Prompt. If you could please instruct me on how to do that, it would be much appreciated. And another question, does a system restore delete personal files?
