the home page isn't set to blank
it is set to optus zoo

what is probably the answer to my problem ' a spelling error in the web address'
thought it would be something quite simple

Goto Internet options and then to the "general" tab. Near the bottom goto "settings" under the "TABS" section. Now check "open home page for new tabs instead of blank page".

You can get to internet options a few ways... here's the way I prefer.
Open IE... right click in a blank area near the tab and check "Menu Bar". Now goto "tools" and "internet options".

The above post is another way to get there.

After re-reading your post...

are you having problems with tabs displaying a blank page?... or a random pop-up window that appears without you doing anything and is simply a "blank page"?

If that's the case, you might be infected with either a virus or more likly a spyware or adware that's poping up windows randomly for you... but those usually go to a site on the net, unless this is happening when your not connected to the internet??
