Black screen with flashing cursor

Compaq presario cq50 / Cq50-110us

Specs: Windows Vista, 80GB 1RAM
I have a Compaq Presario CQ50 laptop and when I start up it shows the Compaq screen and then goes to a black screen with a flashing underscore in the top left corner. Nothing happens after that. The only thing that works is pressing ctrl + alt+ delete restarts it. It shuts off on its own if it is left on for a while.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

what you describe means you lost your master boot record. This is usually the end result of a virus.

You would boot your vista cd and do a boot repair.

I have the same problem and my F11 key is also not functioning for some reason. If I remove, erase, reformat, reload OS, and reinstall the HDD, will it solve my problem? If so, must I reload Vista or can I put Windows 7 in its place?
