Black screen on laptop

I have a black screen when I start the computer and that doesn't alter at all. I have a laptop. What could be wrong and how do I fix this problem.

Do you hear the normal startup sounds and/or does the hard drive make noise like it usually does when it starts up normally? If so, take a flashlight and shine it on the screen. Do you see the image faintly? If so, you may have a bad backlight. Did you try hooking the laptop to an external monitor? WinSimple Software CompTIA A+ Certified
