AVG 7.5 is withdrawing its service shortly. What is the best option after that?

If you are looking for a free replacement AV program for Vista, Avast is an excellent alternative.

There are others that are equally as good but I prefer Avast for its real-time protection, boot scan and AV screen saver.

It doesn't nag you with pop-ups reminding you there's a paid for version (in fact the free version is as good - it's just restricted for home use) and the heuristic detection built in isn't too sensitive reducing the amount of false positives.

My vote for a Vista AV goes to Avast, but there are plenty to choose from.

I agree ... you can't go wrong with Avast!

- Compatible with Vista (x86 & x64)

- Doesn't bog down the machine.

- Free

- And as hinted by btk1w1, you get real-time protection, boot scan & AV screen saver, plus an installation/uninstallation routine that doesn't crap itself all over the whole place.

Jam was a bit brief, but correct! AVG isn't stopping their AVG Free, just the previous version. All you have to do is upgrade to the latest version.

Check http://free.grisoft.com/

Btw, I prefer Avast with Vista.
