well i used to have xp on that notebook, stupidly upgraded it to vista ultimate. when i realized my ac97 sound wouldnt work anymore, i decided to do a dual boot with xp.
so then i only started it into xp for a while, but when i started into vista accidentally once i had the hal.dll missing thing and was never able to boot into xp anymore. i tried to do recovery on that partition again, but during the blue screen dll copying it kept telling me all these dlls cant be copied. so i just formatted the partition and was using it as a storage drive for my vista with no sound.
well, now all of a sudden, vista wont boot anymore, it gets to the desktop and i just see the swirling circle forever. i disabled all the strtup programs, still nothing. i can boot into safe mode with networking and thats it. tried to install a new copy of xp and vista via cd drive but says not formatted disc. tried to install xp and vista setup off my external hard drive but xp doesnt have the install option available, and vista setup just freezes.
all i want to do now is fond a safe way to completely merge my 3 partitions, format the whole thing and install a clean copy of xp. problem is i have never done any of this nd dont know how to go about it. i have an external dvd drive and hard drive available also if this could help because sometimes my notebook doesnt recognize a disk put in the drive :s thanks if anyone can help
no offense buddy but you should have run the Vista Upgrade Advisor from Microsoft. It alerts you as to whether something is amiss and will cause potential problems with Vista. I ran it today and I know what needs done and what can be left alone, and I am all set for Vista. Preparation is vital.
Also, it sounds like you installed Windows XP again AFTER your Vista installation, well again, this is not Microsoft's fault either as the Vista bootloader is different from previous versions of Windows and what you did probably broke the installation completely. Start over. Install XP, THEN install Vista. Or whatever. But you must always install Microsoft Operating Systems in order, oldest first, newest last.
well it had nothing to do with the upgrade advisor, that went fine. i installed it the fist day vista ultimate came out. then i did the dual boot fine also (vista boot pro). the sound in vista worked at first but then quit working. i have no cluew why but it doesnt matter now i just need to completely wip this hard drive and reinstall with a copy of xp. i dont want vista on it whatsoever. in fact the new notebook i got had vista preinstalled and i also want to put xp on it.
Is that because of the new bootloader? Because I dual boot two OSes and I plan to upgrade one of them with Vista. If that'll screw around with my computer and nullify the other OS I'm not going to be very pleased.
Bootsect /NT60 ALL <<< Vista Bootsect /NT52 <<< NTldr XP
******************************************** To create a working multi-boot configuration, install the oldest version of the Windows operating system first. Then, install each newer version in order. Every new Windows version preserves backward compatibility for starting earlier Windows versions.
hey guys.. is there just any simple way anyone could advise me to completely wipe out my hard drive and partition first, and then just put xp back on that notebook?this has been going on for like 4 months now and i have never got any help with it yeat and ive spend countless hours trying different things myself. i dont want anything to do with vista on that thing i hate it with a passion. please, how can i just wipe out the only boots into safe mode vista, along with my partitions and just start from scratch with xp?? i would absolutely love to just do this..
i have 3 xp cds, but none of them will boot up when i restart the computer. i never see the "press any key to boot from cd" message. i also have tried to boot a vista disc, still nothing. i also have all of said discs on an external hard drive, and tried to run it from there. still nothing :s is there something i can try to change in setup to assure it will load directly from bios?
First, I assume that your BIOS allows you to select the CD/DVD drive as the first boot device. Also, you say you have three Win XP CDs, but which one is the original disk that came with your notebook? Maybe I'm missing something here, but my understanding was that Microsoft's rigid anti-piracy precautions would prevent you from being able to install anything but the original XP OS disk on your computer. Have you tried calling MS Tech Support and explaining the situation to them?
