Didn't MS says Vista is much more secure? They are lying when it comes to Vista Firewall.

Read this to learn that Vista Firewall is no better than XP SP2's own.

What to do? Stay with XP until Vista SP5 is released.

"What to do?"

Get an aftermarket firewall the same as most did with Win XP.

The real reason to stay away from Vista is the hardware requirements. They are stiff. Software/drivers will come around, but I guess if one is going to upgrade/build their machines to accomodate Vista, then they are hell bent on making the switch anyways.

Agreed. I checked Vista firewall settings HERE

It's very elementary - with only three arbitrary choices - ON, Block all incoming connections, and OFF.

Now I know why M$ recommend that you buy Windows Live One Care for Vista.

Well, here is one for ya. I have a One Care CD and tried to install it on my Vista install. It errored telling me that I needed XP SP2. lol

So, I tried downloading it from the net, and it wouldn't let me activate it. I sent an email, but haven't heard back.

I gave up and finally installed Kaspersky Internet Security on a 30 day trial.

MS = DOH!

MS is really shooting themselves in the foot with this activation crap. I mean legit users that bought Vista or have new a pc installed with Vista have can't freely upgrade the hardware in their pc in the future without having to worry about reactivating their Vista pc due to going over the point upgrade limit.

I'm still up-in-the-air about Vista. At this point in time, the drivers for my chipset, sound & video card are all still in beta. A few items, like my scanner, don't even have drivers available, yet (unless the XP drivers would work in compatibility mode).

My Linksys router handles the firewall (and yes, it rated stealth on grc.com). Only thing I'd probably have to do is buy AVG Pro AV (since the current free version apparently doesn't work on Vista). Then there's the issue of the Upgrade Advisor stating that The Sims 2 may have issues w/ Vista!

... and have a look at this comparison table:

http://www.firewallleaktester.com/t...

16 firewalls tested with 27 different leak test applications.

the best free firewalls according to this test are Jetico and Comodo (their latest versions support Vista).

http://www.jetico.com/

http://www.personalfirewall.comodo....

Windows Firewall (xp sp2 to be fair) failed every single test!

to provide transparency, each test applications is available for free download, so you may run them yourself to check the efficiency of your firewall.

Well we'll see. I'll probably end up buying the OEM version of Ultimate for 200 bucks and be done with it all...or actually start with it all. :)

Thanks,

All the OEM'S Compaq,HP,Dell,Gateway all have Vista and no option to choose XP. Ive tried to get Dell to sell me a Laptop with XP. They want. They claim Vista will run every program that Windows 2000 and XP will. Well thats a bunch of @#$%*&^!. I ran the Vista Upgrade advisor. Norton ghost 2003 failed. Well that runs on 98 and up until vista. Dell only sells one model with Vista. The XPS 710 i think because of some hardware issue.

What do i put here if i don't put a question?

Just a comment on response No. 7.
I don't know if the Free AVG anti virus works with Vista, but, and it is a big but, maybe Grisoft have not yet got 'OFFICIAL' approval from MS.
It MAY still function entirely satisfactorily. I have Nero and use it with XP, every time a message comes up saying there may be compatability problems with it in XP.
Has never ever caused a problem and failed to burn CD's DVD's. So the my 'Jury' is out re AVG and Vista. Would be interested if someone posts on this forum the true situation.

Should have gone to the Grisoft Site before posting reply No 13.
Grisoft will be issuing a new FREE version 7.5 in the next few weeks which will handle Vista. Having got rid of Norton long time ago and using AVG I would rather wait for AVG to appear. Soon I trust!!!!.
