Comment:

At home I connect to the Internet using a Linksys WRT 54G wireless router, while at work I connect using a LAN cable. But when I move from one WiFi to Cable or vice versa the transfer isn't smooth. At times I have to restart the system, or disable either WiFi or cable, only then do I manage to go online.

IS there anything I can do to reduce the time and effort that goes in.

My suggestion is, on most laptops now there is a button to disable your wifi. I would disable this then connect via cable. That may help.

You could also disable your device, and leave only the one that you are using at that time active.
Configuration screen - network center - manage network connections (translated from Dutch).
Right click to enable or disable your interface.
