You need to provide a bit more information. What happens when you try to update/download - what is the error message, if any, that you are getting? Did you use recovery disks provided with the PC/laptop or ones that were created from the system itself? Have you installed all recovery disks? - some come as a system recovery and a separate 'driver/utilities recovery disk.

Just to be clear, you installed a new HDD then successfully installed Vista using the HP recovery disks, correct? You were then able to activate Windows? Can you (or have you) run Windows Update? Which security are you attempting to install?

My recovery disks installed ok, but windows would not update or download. I could
not download sp1. Norton could not download 360 without sp1 installed.
