Comment:

Hi,
I have a Dell Inspiron E1705 which pretty good falls under the requirements for Vista. The only problem i think is, i've XP media center and will need a Home Premium upgrade..My hard disk is just 60 GB and Partiioned 20 GB each for C,D and E drives. I've a 250 GB external harddrive also. Since vista requires 15 GB for Installation and total 40 GB for better performanace, how will i do this while i do an upgrade, can i format and partition (say 50 and 10 Gb) and then upgrade..I dont know the process.. please someone advice..

Wait - think hard first. First your Dell is an OEM. The Vista upgrade CD you buy locally isn't designed to work with it. Second you will not see the better parts of Vista on this PC because of the old hardware. Third there is no turning back if the upgrade fail to satisfy you. In this case you will have to wipe clean the hard drive of everything.

Now tell us if you understood the ramifications and you are determined to try it anyway.

If anything, you should keep XP on the 20GB C partition & combine D & E into a single 40GB partition, the create a dual boot setup. But as XpUser pointed out, an upgrade CD won't work with an OEM system. However, there are reports that there's a workaround for using an upgrade CD for doing a clean install.

If you're ready to take the leap, read this article first particularly with respect to what kind of eye candy or visual experience you want.

BTW if your old Dell can only go with Vista basic interface rather than Vista Aero interface, then you will be killing your otherwise perfectly functioning XP. This is just my rant :-)

I installed Vista Ultimate as a dual boot on a 18.1GB partitioned drive and it only took up 6.64GB of space.

Thanks for all the suggestions/advice. I still dont get the concept of OEM.. this system in particular was highlighted befoer Vista got released that it wont have a problem as other old systems would have.. the reason being.. Dual Core, 1 GB RAM, better graphics card. Even Dell recommendations were to upgrade the Hard disk for more space.. do i mean something here ??
But still your points will be in my mind, i'm gonna wait for some more time before i install it..

But what are you expecting Vista specifically to do for you that you cannot do now? That is probably the most important question that needs to be asked.

The answer to that question is nothing. I can't think of a single reason why anyone would upgrade now. Is it the idea of always having the newest and latest? Well, thats something to discuss with your shrink. If its the eye candy, there are all kinds of programs on the net to make XP look just like Vista. Try windowblinds for example.

Or, better yet, get Linux and forget the whole thing. ;)

The only single reason that people upgrade to Vista or throw out a perfect functioning PC running XP ( and fill up the PC graveyards) in order to buy Certified for Windows Vista PCs is that they are too gullible in believe what the top two MS salesperson - Uncle Billy & his puppet money boy Ballmer - tell them is the right thing to do. What the buyers fail to understand is that the two gurus are getting more richer.

I only payed $25 (Australian) for the Full Business upgrade, so it wasn't expensive.

Was offered to anyone who bought the XP PRO SP2 upgrade anytime last yr.
