I hope someone here can help..Thanks in advance.

My friend's PC has started showing the BSOD every time she boots up,with the message PAGE_FAULT_IN-NONPAGED_AREA.

We cannot get the PC to boot in safe mode or last known good configuration and the vista repair that comes up does nothing.

We are frankly at our wits end as to how to get the hard drive going again.

She knows that she had a trial of Norton Internet Security that was on trial go out of date just before this happened..no idea if it is connected.

What do we do to try to fix this, she recently lost her job so money for repairs is tight and the PC is only 4 months old.

Thank you for any help offered.

Have you tried contacting Acer technical support ?
Can you get into ther bios to check if the hard drive is still listed and to check the cpu temperature ?
A very useful tool is the Ultimate Boot CD for Windows. You can run various tests by booting up the CD, such as testing the memory, spyware and virus scans, and checking the health of the harddrive.

I havent managed to do any of that so far.

We even considered simply wiping the hard drive and installing windows XP,but because of the BSOD,Im unsure how to do that.

I will try your suggestion and see if that does anything, and I shall reply again,if that is ok with you.

Thanks for your advice,it is appreciated.

You need to run some hardware tests before trying anything since a bad hard drive or failed memory will cause the install of any OS to fail. Try memtest86 for memory and the drive test for the brand installed, I frequently use the Hitachi Drive Fitness Test since it works with both IDE and SATA drives and will test any brand I am checking.

Depending on the ACER model installing XP might not be an option, most of the new ones do not have driver support for XP. First you would need to check the ACER site for all drivers, if they are there for XP then you could try that step.

Another concern for XP is trying to find a copy with a license to install. Since MS pulled copies from store shelves you might not find one to use.

Good luck

This site still has OEM version of XP. Microsoft has NOT pulled XP don't put your wagon before your horse. You have to buy hardware with OEM versions. Buy any hardware and you can get the OEM version. Also check ebay and most will sent an untested peice of hardware.

I was referring to retail box copies, you are correct in that OEM's can still get copies.

Anyone can get copies. And anyone can BUY a legal OEM XP until 2009 as long as you buy hardware.

Hi there!

Got a TravelMate 5720, XP, and I have the same problem. The BSOD message is not always a Page Fault, but this is a frequent one. It started about 2-3 months after I got the PC, and it happens at least once a day... The first times I checked the minidump, it seemed to come from the Synaptic mouse pad, but now, any driver/app can freeze the PC!

I've tried updating all the drivers, ran antiviruses, tested the memory with MemTest, killed every application, killed the AcerEmpowering applications, but to no avail, the PC still crashes!!!

I also tried installing Vista on another partition, but I got the same freezing problem... Looks like a Laptop problem, but it's not the memory, and there is no relevant options in the BIOS either.

Anyone has some new ideas? Anyone experienced the problem, and finally fixed it???

Thanks!
