I'm trying to create four partitions on this 250 GB drive using Vista's Disk Management. It tells me 237 GB are free and I can "shrink" the volume by 117 GB. I am logged on as Administrator.
In preparation, I have done the following:
- Ran the Disk Cleanup Wizard
- Ran AusLogics Defrag
- Disabled System Restore
- Disabled Hibernation
- Disabled the Kernal Memory Dump
- Disabled the Pagefile
- RebootedWhen I went back into Disk Management and tried to shrink C: I got a popup box that said "Logical Disk Manager" at the top and underneath "Access is Denied"
Am I missing something? I'm thinking that in addition to disabling pagefile.sys I should also delete it? However, when it's disabled, I can't see it to delete it! I'm also wondering whether Vista is then reloading it each time I reboot.
What's the trick here? Am I missing a step somewhere? Would I be better off just getting Paragon's Partition Manager and not bothering with Vista's built-in tool?
Thanks, y'all!

The proper way to create partitions is to first create extended partition then logical partitions on extended partition. In other words, logical partitions cannot be created without first having extended partition. For some reason M$ still use the old DOS Fdisk convention when it comes to creating partitions in a Windows environment.
You are right - you will be better off with a third party program. I don't know if Paragon's Partition Manager will work with Vista but if I were you I would opt for ACronis Disk Director Suite 10.0 because it comes with four different utilities including the Partition Manager. If you like you can purchase it from Acronis for $49 something. See link below for more info.
