My son has this HP laptop. Last month we got an update notice for service pack one and he installed it but when it re-booted it said it did not install right so we left it alone.
Today we got the install notice again so tried and after it re-booted and got to the dekstop there was a pop up that said driver compatibility issue and click to go online to find the cause. He connects wireless and the wireless connection got disabled from doing this. So I did a system restore and all is fine now.
Should we not bother with the service pack or do we need to update something from the HP site to install it or how should we proceed? Mary

If all is fine, I wouldn't bother with the service pack. Now, there will be at least 15 posts disagreeing with me because some people believe that the latest is the greatest. I don't.

Without being familiar with Vista's Service Pack, I wouldn't be quick to disingenuously suggest the update as just another meme...
FYI: There are well over 500 fixes bundled into SP1. Many very important & a few rather cosmetic. I strongly encourage anyone running Vista to install the update. The notable changes in Vista SP1 can be found at the link below.

hi Mary,
My comment is just a one penny input.
I installed Vista SP1, but then my CANON Lide 25 scanner was no longer recognized... so I had to switch back (painfully...).
So my advice is to check carefully the potential side effects before installing SP1.

Thanks. Right now our main printer has built in wireless so he can print from the laptop that route but if something stops it then he can just put his files on a thumb drive thingy and print from the main computer. Been too busy to get on there and check HP and see what needs updating so it will be a few weeks before I can get back to it. Mary

I don't believe we can do a repair install as the computer didn't come with Vista disks, only the recovery partioned on the hard drive and the recovery DVD's I made. Laptop is running fine anyway after I did system restore.
Speaking of that I know on my old HP I could go to start run and type in something that would fix corrupt files getting it from the recovery partion on the hard drive. I just wanted to check to make sure that was working on my new computer just in case and I can't remember what to type in. I thought it was SC/ somnething? Mary!

You mean sfc /scannow huh?
It is still there, but you run it in Vista from the "Command Prompt" window & with admin privileges.
- Click Start >> All Programs >> Accessories
- Right-click "Command Prompt" and choose "Run as administrator"
- At the command prompt, type "sfc /scannow" & hit enter.
