CPU/Ram: 3.0GHz/1.0GB
Product: Dell 4600
Comment:

I installed Windows Vista on my PC about 3 or 4 weeks ago (Windows Vista Ultimate Upgrade Retail). I installed the 32-bit version, because I thought that my processor could not do the 64-bit some say it can, others say it can't. My processor is as follows;

Intel Pentium 4 (with Hyper-Threading)
3.0GHz
Prescott
Socket 478 mPGA
90nm Technology.

If I did change to 64-bit would I just put in the upgrade CD and upgrade from 32-bit Vista to 64-bit? Would it likely ask me to re-activate Windows?

... and just how do you expect to install Vista 64bit on an x86 (32bit) CPU - huh?

You're stuck with 32bit. All Socket 478 motherboards and all Socket 478 processors are 32bit only.

By the time you will need 64bit you will be well in doubt for a new pc.

64bit is still a good 4 years away from becoming part of the mainstream.

There is very little software written for 64 bit at this time, so don't worry about it.

.... also there's only up to about 10% potential benefit at this time when running in 64bit versus 32bit - so the incentive to migrate is just not that persuasive.

You can't UPGRADE from a 32 bit system to a 64 bit system. If you were running xp 32 bit then you can only upgrade to vista 32. If you were running xp 64 then you could upgrade to vista 64 (or down to 32).

But if you are running xp 32 and you want to go to vista 64... then you must buy the FULL version.

Of course this is all moot since your processor does not support 64bits

You can buy the oem version if you had the a 64 processor for half the price.
