Can I plug a set of 5.1 speakers into a single headphone socket on my Dell laptop. Will it work. There is an option on the internal menu to select the nearest speakers that match. If not what about the usb socket that you can plug a unit with 4/5 sockets in the end.

5.1 will not have any meaning when connected to a stereo headphone jack, even if it can be physically connected. No damage will be incurred by just connecting.

A 5.1 Dolby Digital decoder is required to have 5.1 surround sound, as you may well know.
