32/64 bit question

Hi guys, i'm not sure how to research this question and so far i was able to find out that 32bit applications can run fine without any problem in a 64bit operating system. The laptop i bought is core 2 duo, which supports 64bit and it came with 32bit vista installed. I couldn't install a 64 bit application is it because the OS is 32bit? then will I able to install 64bit OS using VMWare on a 32bit OS?

I honestly don't know. I'm inclined to say no, because VMWare itself is 32-bit, but I don't know what kind of voodoo they're pulling.
The real question is why would you? VMWare cannot acquire more resources than the OS can see, so you loose the chief advantage of a 64-bit OS: surpassing the 4GB RAM limit. Plus, it wouldn't be running the application natively, so it'd be slow.

ahh i just wanna know if i can run 64bit OS in a 32bit OS using vmware and if it does work then my core2duo works fine for 64bit. So, i can format my vista for xp64bit. I ran cpuid program and its confirm that this is a 64 bit cpu

As far as I know running a 32bit emulator on a 32bit system does not support installation of 64bit OS's but that was what I read a while ago. However if your system reports it can run 64bit then you don't need to test it in an emulator, simply format and install a valid 64 bit version of Vista. Just make sure any BIOS settings for 64bit operation are enabled or whatever is needed (though most automatically detect installation of a 64bit system).

thanks guys..i saw an error message and freaked out when i tried to install a 64bit application on 32bit OS. I'm putting 64bit xp Pro on this laptop!

Before you commit, make sure you have 64-bit drivers for XP. WinXP-x64 driver support is even more flaky than Vista-x64.

I am running Vista 64 quite successfully on a quad core desktop. However before going the 64 bit route, you have to remeber that drivers are a problem and a lot of software wont run either. But as an OS I am happy with it.

General_electric: Multi-cores also generate incompatibility. If you're having issues, you might want to set the program's affinity to a single core.

Thanks guy! It took me hours to find the drivers for XP, not whole lots of new drivers tho. I should have written down each component's brand name so i wont have to dig out each of them from google.
