2730p; nothing but black after loading vista, loads os slow

Specs: Windows Vista
it was working perfectly fine just a few days ago with the latest turbo boost drivers:
suddenly, i don't know what happened (the last thing i did was change the font dpi settings) but now, loading the os takes much longer and with those same drivers, the screen displays nothing but black even after reinstalling them in safe mode.

i've resorted to using the older drivers: which actually work perfectly, but i'm very concerned about what may have caused this in the first place.

one possible clue: when loading the os in safe mode, it actually hangs for about 20 seconds on a file that it also hung with when attempting to load the os from a hdd that then shortly died. could it be that this hdd is dying?

It's more likely that the drivers simply haven't been fully tested and do cause problems on some hardware configurations - that's why it's often best to go for the 'Microsoft certified' driver rather than the latest.

The chance of a failing drive stalling on exactly the same file as a previous failing drive are pretty slim, but if you want to be sure your harddrive hasn't got a problem then you can always download a drive diagnostic from the manufacturer's website - some run under Windows but others let you create a boot disk with their diagnostic software on. Check the drive manufacturer's website.
