Comment: Hi there, I know the issue at hand here is that my NT4 server wants to talk using NetBEUI (even though TCP/IP is installed) and XP does not have NetBEUI. My question is, what's the best solution for this? I don't want to put NetBEUI on the XP machine (and I'm not even sure how since it is not a listed protocol available for installation), so how do I get my dumb-ass NT4 server to show itself with TCP/IP?? Mesa thanks! JJW

Reply: (edit)Everytime I see you on this post, you insult Windows and ask for free advice about things you could research for yourself easily. You need to specify whether you are using XP home or PRO, or??? XP Home version will not allow TCP\IP based networking, only NETBEUI. XP Pro will allow it, and all you have to do is configure it for the correct subnet and gateway as the rest of your network. NT Server has no problem at all in using TCP\IP or NETBEUI or both together.

Reply: (edit)xp pro connects to an NT domain (TCP/IP only) quite easily, it's just a matter of finding where they hid the screen to enter the domain name...

Reply: (edit)Whoa JPG! You're pretty high strung there, buddy. Time to step away from the keyboard and learn some social skills, mesa thinks. Anway, your response only illustrates to me that 1) you really hate ambiguity (or perhaps the name JarJar) and 2) you are correct that I should have been much more clear in my original post, so here goes: a) Yes, it is XP Pro; as I mentioned originally I do not even have NetBEUI as an option to install. b) the XP machine is already part of the domain, it can see the PDC just fine; it has all the correct IP information which was all doled out by DHCP. c) the NT server uses a static IP and is configured correctly to be part of the domain (it is, in fact, a BDC). d) the reason for the original post was because I have checked and rechecked all the usual IP and LAN settings for this server - this problem appears to be an anomaly and I was curious if anyone else on this forum had ever run into it. Although I appreciate the posted attempts to help, I am looking for something beyond "just set up TCP/IP and NT will do everything it's supposed to." That is not the case for this situation. So anyway, if anyone has a further suggestion I would appreciate it. mesa thanks! "MS Fanboy" JJW

Reply: (edit)Hey Jar, on the WinXP CD there is a folder called VALUEADD/MSFT/NET/NETBEUI where you will find netbeui - 2 ways to install - using have disk in adding protocols or following the example in that folder... Aloha, Jason

Reply: (edit)Correct on all 3 counts. I would suggest that you forget NETBEUI and stick to TCP\IP. You say your XP Pro machine can see the PDC just fine, but in the first post you say NT will not 'talk' using NETBEUI. It seems I don't understand what you're asking for here...

Reply: (edit)Hello, I had the same problem. After installing WinXP I was not able to logon to my NT4 server. I made my XP machine member of a workgroup, rebooted and then made it a member of the domain again. I changed my computer name as well. Now I'm back on the domain. I read somewhere else that using a login script can cause these problems. Do you use Kix or something? I do! Greetings

Reply: (edit)XP or 2K will not ping thru my SBS ver 4.0 server, dos-NT4 is fine. I am configured to workgroup for local stations, fixed ip, using the sbs as a dialup server. The ver 4.0 uses Proxy 1.0. The 2K and XP can connect to intranet fine but cannot set to ping outside to net? Am I missing something here? I like the XP and boot it occasionally to test it's connectivity, no luck yet. Microsoft Qbase articles not helpful. HELP!
