Having problems with my laptop PCMCIA Xircom card, Win NT system, card wizord loaded, can see the card, but giving me IO errors. It seems maybe the card is trying to use an IRQ or IO that is already being used by something else in the system.

Type in the keywords "NT IRQ conflict"

Read through the results that come up and decide which one comes closest to your scenario.

IT professionals generally recommend that you make a table listing each of the resources (IRQ's, I/O's, DMA's) that are being used by the system. Ultimately, this is the best advice, but it can take up most of a day, if you've never done it before.

NT has a device manager which makes the situation easier (sometimes.) Click on START, Help, and type in the keyword "Device Manager."

Read several of the Help articles if you need a better understanding of how to change resource assignments for an individual device. Just don't change assignments for the other devices you already have in your computer in such a way as to disable one or more of them. In other words, always write down the current assignments before you start experimenting with alternative configurations.

Does this make sense, or is it all over your head?

Of course, there's always the possibility that you've been through all this already and I'm insulting you by talking down to you. Sorry, I'm not assuming you can't solve this problem yourself.

Dear Carrie:
One: no device managr exits on NT.
Windows 98 does.
Mr Z, may be insulting to you, he likes to write books, not comments. You do have a conflct with your IRQ's
Enter you BIOS program and disable one of you Serial ports. Use IRQ 3 or 4 for your Card.Email me if you have any more questions
It is not difficult to configure a computer to run NT. You only need to get started.
