Are you running any ISAPI filters on the webserver? They seem to cause the problem.

There should be more info in eventvwr, like the Exception Number, Address and the process that caused the MTS error.
It's the process it lists at the end that is (more than likely) causing the problem

I just got the error.

Here is the event viewer info:

An object call caused an exception.
(IID: {51372AEF-CAE7-11CF-BE81-00AA00A2FA25}) (Method: 3) (Microsoft Transaction Server Internals Information: File: i:\viper\src\runtime\mtxex\activity.cpp, Line: 889) (Exception: C0000005) (Address: 0x6b603563)
vbscript!___sbh_alloc_block_from_page + 0xC

The IID value is the COM interface identifier. I tried searching for it and ran into these postings.
Maybe the vbscript! at the end indicates that VBScript itself did not trap an error properly and was the cause. It looks like it was trying to access a block of memory from the Small Block Heap. Could be a C++ Runtime library bug.
No idea of the exact cause or cure. I would also like to know what is up.

Interesting, we just received a similar error message:
NT Application Event Log

"An object call caused an exception. (IID:
{51372AEF-CAE7-11CF-BE81-00AA00A2FA25})
(Method: 3) (Microsoft Transaction Server
Internals Information: File: d:\viper\src\runtime\mtxex\activity.cpp, Line: 889) (Exception: C0000005) (Address: 0x6534231a) OLEAUT32!VariantClear + 0x9c"

If anyone knows how to decypher this I would appreciate some input. It appears to me that mtxex.dll is trying to access/close a memory block through a call to Oleaut32.dll.

I'm also getting this problem but another issue appeared at the same time.
Do you have the following message in your eventlogs?

Event ID: 105
Source: W3SVC

The server was unable to register the administration tool discovery information. The administration tool may not be able to see the server.

I am still checking to see if the 2 are related. This problem is caused by the NetBIOS Interface. Removing this, rebooting, re-installing NetBIOS Interface, re-install NT service pack and reboot should clear it.

Awaiting results from test.

I'm getting the same message, but in a different place:
In the process of troubleshooting a network error message (error 59) on bootup of my Win98 machine, I discovered this in my MTS Log
C:\WINDOWS\MTSLogs\Transaction Server.html
It contains the following listing, several times.
d:\viper\src\runtime\mtxex\activity.cpp

This directory does not exist even though the log indicates several listings from June of 1999 until its last entry of May 12, 2000. My PWS 4 had been set up to start on boot up, but now I have to manual start it. I don't know if this is connected or not?

Concurrent with this network problem is that my printer no longer works on this computer (but does on others). This may not be related, but it's odd that both problems showed up at the same time.
Any thoughts appreciated.

When I called an ASP, the W3SVC died out and the Trancaction Server put the error into the event log:

An object call caused an exception.
(Package: IIS-{Default Web Site//Root/DocuLibr})
(IID: {51372AEF-CAE7-11CF-BE81-00AA00A2FA25}) (Method: 3)
(Microsoft Transaction Server Internals Information: File: d:\viper\src\runtime\mtxex\activity.cpp, Line: 889)
(Exception: C0000005)
(Address: 0x680d54f0)
asp + 0x254F0
asp!TerminateExtension + 0x79F6
asp + 0x320D5
mtxex!MTSCreateActivity + 0x1F3C

We have Site Server 3.0 and IIS 4.0 installed on NT 4.0 SP 4. A day after when we installed MDAC 2.5 on this server this error appeared.
What do you think, has this MDAC installation to do with the Transaction Server's error?
Thank you for your comments. Any answers are appreciated.

well, add me to the list of developers exasperated by this site server messing. i re-installed after getting the error you are talking about and it is now swapped for another error. for your information:
The description for Event ID ( 12293 ) in Source ( Microsoft Site Server 3.0 ) could not be found. It contains the following insertion string(s): [Volcano Coffee]Component Execution failed for component[0x3] hr: 0x80040E2F
ProgID: Commerce.SaveReceipt.1
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Violation of PRIMARY KEY constraint 'PK__vc30_receipt__20C1E124'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'vc30_receipt'.

we rang microsoft and they told us to clean the machine and install again. if we ring again we'll probably get the same answer (a term i use loosely!). we got a wrox press site server book which spends a whole chapter on the installation of site server! and the author doesn't say definitively what order everything should be installed in.

personally i think we're doomed so i'm off to get a job as a ladyman on the beaches of thailand!!!

ps. why do these errors have filenames and line numbers. what use is that when your trying to debug something??????

Help.

This thing just gets worse.

Tried three simultaneous purchases using the Clock Tower sample site from three browsers. The following Transaction Server error was reported in event viewer.

The run-time environment caught an exception during a call into your component.
This error caused the process to terminate. Unbind (ProgId: Commerce.MtsTxPipeline)
(CLSID: {410FA6BC-E5A5-11D0-893D-00A0C90543B8})
(Interface: IUnknown)
(IID: {00000000-0000-0000-C000-000000000046})
(Method: 2)
(Microsoft Transaction Server Internals Information: File: d:\viper\src\runtime\context\ccontext.cpp, Line: 2817)

The WWW Publishing Service then stops.

We are using our own purchase pipeline with a custom payment component.

I found this, maybe I can help you ...:

PROBLEM
Valentijn Siebrands found following. Crashing IIS using ordinary
vbscript in an ASP page. Using Regular expressions one can filter
eg the contents of an HTML page. In this case Valentijn was
planning to filter some words. But some servers crashed on a not
valid regular expression when he pressed F5 in VID.

<%
Set fso = createobject("scripting.filesystemobject")
Checkfile = server.MapPath("\") & "\index\mypage.html"
mystring = fso.OpenTextFile ((checkfile)).ReadAll

set myregexp = new regexp

myregexp.Global = TRUE
myregexp.IgnoreCase = true
' Normal regular expresion
'myregexp.Pattern = "[A-Z0-9\.\-\_\ ]+"
' A not valid expression
myregexp.Pattern = ".*"
set mymatches =myregexp.Execute (mystring)

for each thing in mymatches
Response.Write thing
next
%>

Results:

Winnt 4.0 Ent. sp5 IIS: (In the browser) a trappable error occured _or_ no data is returned aka: normal reaction on invalid expression
Winnt 4.0 Ent. sp6 IIS: Inetinfo.exe crashes without any
notice Winnt 4.0 Ent. sp6a IIS: Inetinfo.exe dies eventlog message:

An object call caused an exception.

Access violation? No doc's in MS support database regarding Regexp
or i:\viper\src\runtime

SOLUTION

Nothing yet.

Here is the sub that cause my problem:

<% Sub WriteHTML (file)

Dim fso, f

Set fso = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
Set f = fso.OpenTextFile(file , 1)
LeerArchivoDeTextoCompleto = f.ReadAll
Response.Write LeerArchivoDeTextoCompleto
LeerArchivoDeTextoCompleto=""
f.close

set f=nothing
set fso=nothing

end sub %>

Bye

I met the same problem.
Try to delete Packages in MTS except pre-installed IIS packages.
In my case, I installed SAFileUp component several times and this problem occurs.
After deleting SAFileUp packages in MTS I re-installed SAFileUp, I never saw that msg yet.

GOOD LUCK!

We were also experiencing the same problem. In our case the culprit was the FormatNumber function. We upgraded form VBScript 5.0 to VBScript 5.5 and the problem is solved. See Microsoft KB article Q244787.

We're having the same problem. It seems to be a maliscious attack from a hacker. It conserns the VB script in an ASP file:

Try the site:

Well, well, well ... and here I was thinking that I was alone with this one.

Problem solved ...

For some or other reason, by removing my User defined Data Types and changing them to individual arrays the problem goes away!!
I know it sounds far fetched BUT it works!!!

There would seem to be a problem with IIS4 and MTS (previously called "Viper") and Heaps generated by the User DataTypes I think. I must admit that now that my ActiveX .DLL works, I don't care anymore what caused the problem :-)
Hope this solves someone else's nightmare.

Neil

Sorry lads, i forgot about this forum. here is the solution i came up with.

i started devouring msdn with all the information in it regarding COM objects and IIS etc and now consider myself quite knowledgeable in that area. I built a payment component in C++ that sends card payment requests to an authorisation host over SSL. Also, the component suports multiple sites on the one server.

When i started off, i followed the wrox press site server book, but it's only good for getting you started. here is what i did when i threw the book in the bin.

First of all, i made the component a "both-threaded" object aggregating the free-threaded marshaler and carefully made sure that data integerity was protected from x-apartment calls into the object. I also made the object a singleton (i have a thing about singletons!) object so there is only ever one instance of the object created per process (mts/iis). and voila, everything is now hunky dory. i have been able to test our sites for 24 hour stints with 1000 simultaneous users. personally, i think by aggregating the FTM (you need to be using C++) and mark the object as "both-threaded" in the registry and you could also see your problems disappear(!?)

Hi all,

I think the problem only comes if you are using ActiveX or other COM objects inside your ASP scripts on IIS 4/MTS platform under heavy load (it may also affect IIS 5, but I have never tested it). One of the calls to CreateObject, Server.CreateObject or New may have caused this crash.

After passing some long nightmare, I discover that by simply putting all objects inside MTS packages the problem will disappear.

Good luck.

We had this problem which was cause by having some ASP VBScript classes which are only support by VBScript 5 onwards. We got the latest download from Microsoft (http://msdn.microsoft.com/scripting), installed it, rebooted the server and then everything worked fine. Hope this helps some of you.
