Hello, I have an opportunity to buy some software for about $15.00. It's an unopened Windows NT 4.0 Workstation CD with COA. Is this suitable for running on an ordinary stand alone PC or laptop? Or is it some sort of business version for running on a network or something?

Windows 98SE
HP Pavillion
Celeron 533MHz
HDD 10GB + 4GB
64MB RAM
Antiquated & Poor Quality
Runs like a dream.

Hi Tryan,

NT4 workstation is suitable for home, standalone use.

It's a llitle hard to get the hang of it.

It can be made to look much like w9x.

IT'S NOT.

If your main purpose is to learn something, you could hardly go wrong at that price.

If your main goal is to get up and running with the minmum of ado, use w98se.

I agree with the above BUT & it is a big BUT, NT4 has almost no PLP so you better have all the drivers at hand, particularly on a laptop & finally, NT4 was a an unpredictable heap till it got to SP6A so make sure you get the SP with it & finally it is a great learning tool for W2K & WXP but this is where the infamous BSOD originated! famously in one case leaving a nuclear propelled missile cruiser defenceless in the Arabian Gulf when the server kept crashing!
Have fun!
Regards.

Bob Mitchell.

Bob,

"unpredictable heap"

I love it.

Guess I'm lucky the cruiser I was on had 'coffe grinder' computers.

With TUBES.

[For those of the British faith, those are valves.]

Bob,

Yeah, analog.

"coffee grinders"

Synchros, servos, resolvers, differential generators, 10 turn pots.

Pretty scary, ain't it?

Best,

M2

Thanks for the replies all - that pretty much decides it for me - I was going to use it so I could load legal software onto an old computer or an old laptop so I could re-sell it but I would most likely be selling to a beginner buying their first computer. I don't want to make it an unpleasant experience for them so I'll keep an eye out for Win98 insead.

Thanks heaps.
Tracey
