Windows Stalling

my computer will load up, but upon entering into windows will just pretty much do nothing. no icons are shown but the hourglass (mouse) keeps turning over. then nothing. what could be the problem? thanks for the help

Try this:

Open task manager (with ctrl+alt+del)
go to processes and kill "explorer.exe". Then go to the first tab "applications" and start explorer.exe again. I.e. klick on new task and go to c:\winnt\explorer.exe. This should force your desktop with icons to open.
