Comment:

We have a peer to peer network using Windows NT. Two of my workstations (running Windows 98) are not locating the server and my network printer. I cannot see either workstations in Network Neighborhood, BUT both workstations can see each other - and only each other and no longer any of the other workstations on the network. I'm utterly confused. I've looked at the network settings and everything seems to be in place. Please help. Thanks!

Are the Two Workstations running NT Workstation or are they running NT Server? Is the Network Printer on one of the NT Machines? Do you have Client for Microsoft networking installed on allyour machines?

Do you have a common protocol installed on all OS's... '98 defaults to TCP/IP, whilst NT is whatever you choose to install... Remove any unused/unrequired/unnecessary protocols (typically IPX/ISPX). If your system was originally on NetBeui then stay with it, and remove TCP/IP from the '98 systems and replace with NetBeui. NetBeui is more than adequate for simple SoHo LAN's; fewest problems, least demanding on system resources, easiest to install/set-up... (See Helmig's comments on this - link below...)

For a useful 'from basics upwards' tutorial
/reference site... visit:

and browse your way through Helmig's excellent site...

Also, from John Savill's http://ntfaq.com sit:

http://www.ntfaq.com/Section.cfm?sectionID=46

may point you the way home...

You do need to verify the protocol issue; and no doubt you have already checked the Client for M$ Networks is installed, and File/Print sharing enabled (so when the '98's do finally show up in Network Neighbourhood...) there is something to see - once you allow an actual share on those systems...

Whatever protocol is installed in the NT systems, verify it is also in the '98's and is the first one listed (top of binding order).

Good luck,

Hi there,

First thing - as the others have said, check you are all using the same protocols.

Second - check that the workgroup name is the same.

Third - find out if someone has been "playing" with the machines - and give them some verbal!

I am trying to add two programs to the Startup file and need there to be a delay between the two. One needs to open before the other.
