Comment: Have 2 machines that are setup as Primary Domain Controllers for different domains. Need to make one of them a backup domain controller for the other one's domain. Book says the only way to create a backup domain controller is during NT Server install. Is there another way to get all computer account and user account information copied to the other domain controller? Don't want to re-install NT Server.

Reply: (edit)It almost sounds like you want to import even the permissions inherent to the other domain. From my experience, you have no choice but to do a complete re-install of the server in order to make it a BDC and hand type in the users into the new domain. Another option is to do a complete 2-way trust between the domains, and handle permissions in that manner. However, it doesn't meet your requirement to make the 1 PDC to a BDC.

Reply: (edit)MS makes DNS such a confusing issue when it is very simple... Being a PDC only means that there is at least one domain that the server is controlling as the primary. You can create any multitude of secondary zones on a PDC without converting it to a BDC... The VERY FIRST question asked when creating a new zone with the Domain Manager is if it is to be a Primary or Secondary zone. If you need some detail, give a holler.
