Hi all geneous of Windows NT Server Installation,

Currently I am facing a problem and unable to install Windows NT 4.0 Server.

I have one hard disk of 20 GB I partitioned it in this way
Partition 1 - FAT16 - 2GB - Primary - Windows 98 installed and working ok.
Partition 2 - FAT16 - 18GB - Extended
2A - FAT16 - 2GB - Logical - No data. I want to install Windows NT 4.0 Server here
2B - FAT32 - 6GB - Logical - Application software installed
2C - FAT32 - 6GB - Logical - Application software installed
2D - FAT16 - 1.7GB - Logical - Application software installed

I have two floppy drives A: 1.2 MB, B: 1.44 MB
and a CD-ROM, 64 MB SD RAM.

I tried to install Windows NT in following 2 ways but faced problem in both approach.

1. After booting from Windows 98, I put CD of Windows NT 4.0 server in CD-ROM and pressed button install Windows NT. It started copying the files to C:. After copying the message appears and says you restart the computer. I restart the computer a blue scree appears on which "Windows NT Setup" is written and a white bottom status line appears. It shows that it is loading some drivers in the status line. After that screen goes and a new blue screen apears. This is screen is the normal blue screen which apears every time when we start Windows NT on any machine. In the upper left corner it wites "Genuine intel.. 64 MB Ram .. multiprocessor CPU..". Now, this screen stays for a minute or so than the blue screen of death appears in which it shows that it faces problem ntoskrnl.exe (or name like it). Run /CRASHDEBUG. I restarted the process for 3 more times but everytime I face the same problem.
What should I do ?

2. The floppy less aproach didnt work so I tried using this aproach. I boot from Windows 98 bootable floppy of 1.44 MB by swaping my floppy drive in bios setup. that I started setup from CD-ROM which asked for 1st, 2nd and 3rd floppy. At the end of the 3rd floppy it asked me to "Insert Windows NT Workstation CD into CD-ROM" ! I have the CD of Windows NT Server and it is asking me for Workstation. I dont understand the problem.

Will you please help me as soon as possible ?

Are you trying to dual-boot?

Windows NT cant recognize a fat32 partition without help. Refer to post 3279 on this forum on how to properly do this.

Ummm

I've installed both NTWS and NTSvr in dual/multi-boots ('9x/NT) many times without any of problems you seem to have encountered. Perhaps I've been lucky?

Some thoughts.

It's generally considered best (by M$ and the gurus out there) to install NT from outside any presently installed OS, and also via the 3 floppies route. (It will go in from '9x but...) So make a set of floppies using the /ox switch (see M$ KB item # Q131735) and use these. These floppies allow set-up to run from most CDROM and allow set up to go ahead from outside any current installed OS.

Also have a good read/browse through the article M$ KB #Q126690 and in particular problem/solution 4... It may have some bearing on your problems?

There is a known bug for NT with partitions created with '98 Fdisk. NT doesn't appear to like them... MS KB #Q195211 is the reference for this. Which having said post #3279 on this NT forum doesn't seem to pose any problems when it uses '98 Fdisk to create the NT (boot) partition (logical-disk) for NT system files...? (And the 3279 route does work OK.)

This may or may not be part of your problem...?

In terms of NT partition requirements (boot-code boundary etc.) you seem to have stayed well within all of those. However you will also need to address NT and the larger HD issue. Your HD = 20Gig; NT doesn't like them over 7.8/8Gig - unless you provide an updated ATAPI.exe.

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q197/6/67.ASP

is the M$ KB on this one - useful to read.

It's also discussed in John Savill's FAQs at:

http://www.windows2000faq.com - installations section - specifically:

http://www.windows2000faq.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=13894

Finally one other option is to use '98 (Explorer) to copy the NT i386 to the c: drive and then run set-up from there - via a 'DOS' boot. You would use a DOS/'9x boot-disk to access the C: drive; then run the command below to run set-up. Do not run this from a DOS window inside '98.

c:\winnt.exe /b /x /s:c:\i386\winnt.exe

/b = floppless install;
/x = make no floppies;
/s: = location of winnt.exe directory;
(in this case /s: = c:\i386)

This may solve your problems.

An install this way (off the HD) is usually a faster, less problematic installation.

If none of the above resolve it for you, nor input from others here (and elsewhere?) either, then post back with the exact error messages you get. It's possible they may provide more info. to enable a fix to be found?

All of the above presumes your system is NT compliant (i.e. it fits the NT HCL?); though as you are using SDRAM I'm pretty sure it does, as it's obviously recent kit.

Hi All,

ThanX for you assistance. The problem-1 I asked could not work till now. And the for the 2nd part I am extremly sorry to let you know that I was mistakenly using Windows Nt 4.0 Workstation's installbale floppies. I brought it from my friend. Thank you once again for you prompt responce.

I made a progress in the above problem but still I am unable to Install NT.

no keys--------------
When it askes for the drive on which I want to install NT. It shows me
C: - Unformatted or Damaged
D: - Unformatted or Damaged
-- (FAT32)
Unpartitioned

Now I selected D:, but it says that C: is also Unformatted or Dmaged so it needs to format it. I didnot allow to format C:. I tried deleting D: and than again selected D: to install NT but the same error occurd.

Now, a new problem occured. I created all the partition using FDISK of Windows 98. And to install NT I rearranged and resize them using Partition Magic. I did it before any attempt to install NT. After attempting to install NT on D:, FDSIK hangs after asking for large disksupport, and Partition Magic terminates after complaining about the Changed Disk Geometry.

Is there any utility to fix the partion table problem ? I have Ranish Partition Manager, can I use it to fix the problem ? how ? Help me out of the situation. I want to save my Windows 98 OS and data on other partitions.

Thanks again,
Setu Shah
