I am having a series of problems with this server. The server just acts as a central file sharing point on a peer to peer network. when i look at the various processes running explorer.exe appears to be running twice. I am not sure why this is. Also i when i try to shut down the computer i get various programs crashing. The programs that crash are a VisionUtilityMonitor1 and both of the Explorer.exe's. I am not sure if this could be a memory problem since there is only 64 mb or Ram which i am in the process of upgrading.

My second problem is i was trying to install a CDRW and i cannot get the machine to recognize the drive for the life of me. I installed it inplace of the old CD drive and the server just doesnt find it. i cant access it i cant add it as new hardware. I dont know if i should try to install the drives when i have the old cdrom in then try the new one.

The server is a compaq Prosignia 740.
Any help would be great
Thanks
Drew

Having multiple copies of Explorer running is not unexpected. There is always one copy which presents you with the desktop, if you open folders such as Control panel, Printers etc you would find a second copy of explorer. So don't worry about that.

A couple of things to check:
1. As the machine doesn't have too much RAM is the pagefile big enough? I would make sure that it was around 128mbytes in size.
2. Is Service pack 6a applied?

As for the crashes, it is best to make sure that all applications etc, running on the server are true 32bit and not older 16bit Windows 3 type apps. Check websites for these apps to see if there are any patches or updates.

To free up memory, check what services are running on the server and if there are any that are not really needed set them to 'manual' at startup. Then sometime 0after a reboot you can check the services to see if any of those set to manual have been started or not.

As for the CD-RW drive, you say you swapped it with an existing CD drive. You didn't say whether EIDE or SCSI. If it's EIDE is it recognised in the system BIOS? Also, did you make sure the master/slave link on the back of the drive was set the same?

If SCSI, is the device recognised by the SCSI controller BIOS at startup? Also, is the ID address set the same as the old drive?

I am not sure the current size of the pagefile. I will check that tonight and adjust as necessary. I can find out exactly what service pack was installed too. I know its SP6 but not sure if there is a difference between that and SP6a. Ill check on the apps to make sure they are all 32 bit also.

as for the cdrom it is EIDE i forgot to put that in the post. I am not sure if it is recognized in BIOS or not. I will check on that tonight too. The jumper was set up correctly because i double checked it with the old drive

Thanks
Drew

Moin Drew,
you can find out, if your SP is 6a this way:
Start/run/winver
a window will pop up with some feedback about your OS, build, exact SP and memory.
MfG, Carl.
