Maybe I'm in the wrong forum, but this is Windows and DOS related. I'm running Windows 98 but lately every time I start up my computer and get into Windows, an MS-DOS window pops up. This is what it says:
Specified COMMAND search directory badMicrosoft(R) Windows 98
(C)Copyright Microsoft Corp 1981-1998.C:\
I haven't done anything out of the ordinary or downloaded anything in the time before this started and I don't know what to do. If I'm in the wrong place, sorry, but any info would be greatly appreciated!

Not quite sure waht the problem is, but here's an educated guess you can try:
Look in your root directory (C:\) for the file command.com.
Look in the windows directory (C:\Windows) for the same file.
If it exists in one, but not the other, copy it so that it's in both.
If you OS is Windows98SE, the file size should be 91.6K (93,890 bytes).
Reason for guess: Something that starts up requires access to the command interpreter, and somehow it's been moved or removed.

Thanks for the help, Chase, but it didn't work.
I already have the command.com files in both directories.
Any other suggestions?

OK. This will be long and tedious, but I think it's about where you're at.
Start> Run>
Type in "msconfig" and hit OK.Check the config.sys and autoexec.bat tabs for programs loading. Check the "set" line for "Path" and make sure it's correct.
Then, check through the system.ini tab, under "boot" and see what programs are loading. You'll probably have to go through them a few at a time. Turn some off, and reboot. If the problem goes away, then one of them is the culprit.
If all the selections in the "boot" tab are OK, press on to the "Startup" tab, and start the
process over.Under the win.ini tab, there's a "load=" line under the "windows" folder that also loads programs. Check that line, too.
Once you find the program that's causing it, you can remove it, or reinstall it (or both), and maybe that will fix your problem.
HTH,
Chase
