Subject: win nt4 dns error |
Comment: I have very limited knowledge of NT or networking and need some help with the following problem please? I have a small network of 6 workstations an one server. The server is running SBS 4.5 and the workstations are running win nt 4. The network itself is running great , I have a modem in the server which is used for sending/receiving faxes from the workstations and must otherwise be left free. The workstation in the Bosses office also has a modem for which he wants to connect to the internet however, i have tried to set up three different ISPs and although i can connect to the internet IE5 reports that the page can not be displayed (can not find server or DNS error). I have reformatted and re-installed NT4 on this box and then set up the ISP before bringing it back onto the network and ISP connection is fine but, as soon as i bring the box back into the network Im back to the original problem "can not find server or DNS error" any help to sort out this problem will be much appreciated. Bob PS ive set the server up to an ISP for a test and it connects and displays all pages fine.

Reply: (edit)stevie_boy I dont think that the link you sent seems to be relivant as it describes IE5 under win 95 & 98 as an OS. I checked anyway and found that I dont have wsock.vxd on my system as the link suggested but i dont know if it is supposed to have. Bob

Reply: (edit)I`m no expert on this, but there are a few things you should check. As far as I know if all the PCs are on the same wire then you`re gonna need a gateway address and a router. Your bosses PC can be the router. It will need two NICs,one for the network and one for internet. You then should be able to go on the net on that PC. If you want others to access the internet then you have to give them the gateway address in the tcp/ip properties. You should also post this on the networking forum as they may know more. Also try www.technet.com it`s a MS site with great help for everything. Good luck.

Reply: (edit)it just sounds like the DNS IP address may not be entered correctly. what DNS IP entries do you have under the DNS tab of TCP/IP properties?

Reply: (edit)Hi ribit, On the workstation DNS tab all that is in there is the name of the workstation under the Host name and all the other parts are empty. Bob
