my business has a small network with about 11 computors all running NT, configured with netbeui. one of the computors, regularly loses its connection to the network, this has been happening for a week the connection can only be restored by rebooting the machine, logging off and on won't work... there is a printer connected to the computor also. the only thing thats been changed to the machine is a new videocard was installed (a dualhead matrox). the network card was replaced in an attempt to fix the problem, but that hasn't worked, we also tried switching to a new port on the router... can anyone help??? this problem needs to be resolved asap!!!!

Mike have you used the command "netstat -a" at a command prompt. I have been having a similar problem, I believe. The only indication that I have that something is wrong is that when I use netstat I see the server is giving the error TIMED_WAIT.
Have you noticed any pattern (time based or otherwise) when the computer loses it's connection.

dan, no i haven't... i usually get the message when im in microstation (CAD) and it [microstation] will prompt that the connection is lost, then if i go into explorer i won't be able to see any of the mapped drives... i can't find any pattern at all, it started off at random long enough to get a decent amount of work done until a workaround could be reached and then it became more frequentlogon time time would be in the minutes, and that became unfeasable so we swiped network cards and all seemed fine for a couple of hours until it did it again... so here we are...

I assume your not getting any errors in event viewer, is this correct?
Try the "netstat -a" command at a good time and a lost connection time.

tons of them... none when the connection lost beside the one from microstation, but when the comp is restarted, these events are always present:
The description for Event ID ( 26 ) in Source ( mssermou ) could not be found. It contains the following insertion string(s): .
Id#29 The description for Event ID ( 26 ) in Source ( msbusmou ) could not be found. It contains the following insertion string(s): .
Id#29 The control registers for COM1 overlaps with the COM2 control registers.
Id# 3 User configuration data for parameter COM1 overriding firmware configuration data.
Id# 4 Unable to create the symbolic link for COM2.

Using microsoft support knowledge base
keyword "event ID 26"gives huge list
I found article id Q164297Do you have an intellipoint mouse?
CAUSEThe IntelliPoint software installs these devices and sets them to System startup. When Windows NT does not find
these devices, it logs an event 26 and unload the drivers from memory.
RESOLUTIONTo disable these devices, follow these steps:
1.In Control Panel, double-click Devices.
2.Click the device mentioned in the event log.
3.Click Startup.
4.Set the Startup Type to Disabled, and then click OK.
5.Close Control Panel and then restart the computer.
I am not sure this is the real problem or just a minor thing.

the messages aren't from when the network connection is lost, only those after i restart the only event logged at the time the problem occurs is the one microstation gives me, its the same as the error that comes across the screen, telling me the connection is lost...

Hi Mike,
Have you tried putting back the old network card onto another slot ?
Also enable the TCP/IP services rather than just running the netbeui services.

im sorry, tcp/ip in enabled (i didn't set up this network i just have the pleasure of trying to figure out whats wrong...) the comp has a "D-Link dfe-530tx PCI Fast ethernet adapter" i'm going to see how long the connection stays stable, before i switch the slots, could this new video card be cuasing problems, i think i remember this happening before the card but ever since the problem escalated, there are no irq conflicts, and the pci slot is empty between the net card and the agp slot...

Okay
Why NETBEUI on 11 machiunes in a network; do you like broadcast traffic ????
You are talking about a router, NETBEUI is not routable.
To do,
Get rid of Netbeui and put all on TCP/IP
How are your computers connected, HUb or Switch ??????/
IS the computer that has the problem a server ??
Set NIC to the network on halfduplex and check again !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do a ping -t to the computer and see how it evaluates ( if there is still a problem )
Change NIC card
Check cables
Use other port on HUB or Switch

like i said i didn't set this network up, this computor is a print server as well as a workstation, the main files are kept on another machine, this is the only computor with the problem, and i tried a different port on the hub, that didn't do anything, i replaced the nic and all seemed to work well until yesterday afternoon when i lost the connection again, so i rebooted and it has been fine ever since...
i'm not real clear on netbeui or it does so sorry if im giving vague info. but i know tcp/ip is configured...

i can't ping the computor, i get a bad address message, but i can ping other computors from this machine

ok, it just lost its connection again, i tried to ping it from a different machine, it came up "requeust timed out" for every ping, but, after about 20 or so a ping came back from the machine, then timed out again... then after a couple of minutes the connection was fully restored, no reboot required... any ideas?

is there a way i can ping the machine for an hour or so, and then print out the results, to try to find a pattern?

hi there,
check out the (i) tcp/ip properties in control panel or ipconfig /all and compare settings with another w/station, things to look out for are :subnet mask, node type, default gateway and ensure tcp/ip is first in binding order(2) nebbui can also cause broadcast overflow if print server cannot handle all jobs sent, check/delete old jobs in sppoler directory.
good luck...

Hi Mike,
Try to remove your Network card from the system (not physicaly!!!) and then install it again. IMPORTANT!!! Write down the information in Properties so you can add it with the current information!
If this won't work, you should try to upgrade your hardware drivers, even for the mother/mainboard (might even be good to upgrade the BIOS if you feel up to it. NOTE: It can be dangerous to upgrade the BIOS if you do something wrong but very healthy if you do it right!!!)

Hi Mike,
I've worked on this problem before at one of my client in Anaheim. The network connection shows up one day and disappears the next day. Rebooting workstation will restore the connection but not always. What I have done is remove NETBEUI and put all (both server and workstations) on TCP/IP. Do you have a IP scheme in place? If not, you can make up one. Let me know if you need further assistance.

As ElvisJ menstioned,

the connection has been a little more stable than it was, it only loses the connection about once a day, usually in late afternoon. well anyway can someone explain to me how netbeui works, and why it could be causing this problem? this is my first experience with it.

netbeui (netbios extended user interface)
suitable for small networks (workgroups). It runs over the standard 802.2 data-link protocol layer.
only configuration required for the protocol
is the computer name.
advantages: very fast in small network
low usage of memory
disavantage: not routable
do a search for netbeui on the web for more details.

Try this address. It has a free downloadable program that has some nice features to diagnose networking problems. The program is Micro Net Utilities. It may let you ping for awhile & then print the results. It also has a lot of other handy options.
