win 98 workstation

I have an NT4.0 server as PDC. Most workstations are running WIN98. Workstation NIC is 3C905C-TX. Workstations use PDC domain to validate networklogon.
I am unable to logon to domain from one WIN98 client either as administrator orany other user.
I can get a return ping from 127.0.0.1. The workstation has had its IP address assigned by a DHCP server other than the PDC and winipcfg confirms that new IP address is assigned each bootup.
I cannot ping either the PDC or the DHCP server. I'm sure I'm overlooking something obvious but I'm stumped. Any advice would be appreciated as my brain is frazzled.

I would check to see if there is an LMHOST file on the Win98 PC - they can do goofy stuff like that.
Have you tried setting a known-good PC in it's place to rule out wiring?

Thanks for the response Larry. I have used the connection with another workstation and it works well. The Hosts and Lmhosts are the sample files set up by the system. They still have the .sam designation and no changes have been made. I'm going to rename them and see what happens.
